The Moral of the Forest - Written by Michael Ross

The morning was bright and sunny and the day was much anticipated.
Every one of the forest creatures was very glad for spring to have come.
This spring was just the beginning of everything. The bustling and growing families coming out of their dens to see the morning light filtering through the canopy of the trees overhead.

Animals were starting to search for food. After a long winter the growing vegetation would be a welcome change. A family of chipmunks were fighting over some seeds on the ground, chattering back and forth in annoyance at the others wanting to get the same find. Still, some others continue searching the woods for stashes from the winter that got lost in the snow.

The rabbits were hopping around enjoying themselves ducking under bushes and around trees and eating small plants that were poking through the quickly melting snow.
Everything was happy in the forest and everything had a purpose. Just as these plant eaters would be looking for their food so would the predators be searching for theirs.

"Come inside children, you've played long enough, We have work to do." said the mother mole.
"Why? Do we really have to?" replied the children. "Can't we stay out for a few more minutes?"
The mother mole was annoyed by the children reacting in this manner. "Chores must be done and the sooner they are finished the sooner you can go play again." replied the mother mole.

All of the children returned to their hole and went about their chores, unawares that the forest was really not a safe place at this time of the year. predators prey on the young and inexperienced. Cats and dogs may be domesticated but they still hunt if given the chance. In this forest the bears live and beasts that cannot be domesticated roam freely, waiting for a meal to waltz by unawares.

The mother animals always tell their young about these predators and they always end up losing at least one of their young that get curious about the creatures, believing that it is only a tale meant to scare the children into doing their chores and being good. But after one goes missing a commotion is raised and nothing is ever the same until the next generation comes around.

While everyone was about their business in came a fox, seeking a meal. "Oh Mrs. Beaver, would you give me a meal? I am hungry after the long cold winter." says the fox. "Never will I part with that which is so dear to my heart. Nor shall you eat me." replies the beaver in a protective motherly way. And all the animals told the fox to leave.

The fox wonders off and away from the forest creature's community. But as soon as the fox leaves in wanders a bear, hungry after his hibernation. "Just passing through would you give me a morsel to curb my appetite until I can get to the river for my lot of fish." Again in protecting their young, all the animals of the forest told the bear to leave.

Finally after the bear left the community a cat wandered in. Slinking low to the ground and in a playful tone the cat purred and said "Please send the children out to play. They have worked long enough and deserve a break." Now while some of the animals resisted the very convincing cat some were unable to stop some of their children becoming excited and rushing out into the mouth of the waiting cat.

This is indeed a sobering tale and although some lives are lost, parents really try to protect their children as they grow up. There will be bumps and bruises for sure. But children need to keep in mind that although rules and boundaries may seem to be boring, the parents have gone through the same things when they were young.

Reflect on the experiences of your elders and try always to do as you are instructed for if you don't do what you are told and rush out into this forest of a world you may get swallowed up by a trap and a snare and ultimately lose out on a full life. Don't leave home just to get away from the rules. These are the basis for society and you will have them wherever you go.

La mañana era brillante y soleada y el día era mucho anticipado. Cada uno de las criaturas de bosque estaba muy contento para la primavera para haber venido. Esta primavera era apenas el principio de todo. El meneándose y las familias crecientes que salen de sus guaridas para ver la luz de la mañana que filtra por el dosel de los árboles de arriba.

Los animales empezaban a buscar para el alimento. Después que un invierno largo que la vegetación creciente sería un cambio bienvenido. "Las tareas se deben hacer y el más pronto ellos son terminados el más pronto usted puede ir el juego otra vez." contestó el lunar de madre.

Todos los niños vueltos a su hoyo y fue acerca de sus tareas, desprevenido que el bosque realmente no era un lugar seguro en este momento del año. los animales de rapiña atacan en los jóvenes e inexperimentado. Los gatos y los perros se pueden domesticar pero ellos cazan todavía si dada la oportunidad. En este bosque que los osos viven y las bestias que no se pueden domesticar el paseo libremente, esperando una comida para bailar el vals por desprevenido.

Los animales de la madre siempre dicen a sus jóvenes acerca de estos animales de rapiña y acerca de ellos siempre acaban por perder por lo menos uno de sus jóvenes que obtienen curioso acerca de las criaturas, creyendo que es sólo un cuento significó para espantar los niños a hacer sus tareas y es bueno. Pero después que uno va perdiendo un tumulto se levanta y nada es jamás el mismo hasta que la próxima generación se recupere.

Mientras todos estaban acerca de su negocio en vino un zorro, buscando una comida. ¿"Ah Castor de Sra., daría me usted una comida? Tengo hambre después que el invierno frío largo." dice el zorro. "Nunca hace despido con el que es tan preferido. Ni irá usted me come." contesta el castor en una manera madra protectora. Y todos los animales dijeron el zorro para salir.

El zorro se pregunta lejos y lejos de la comunidad de criatura de bosque. Pero tan pronto como el zorro sale en vaga un oso, hambriento después de su hibernación. "Apenas paso por le hace me da un bocado para limitar mi apetito hasta que pueda llegar al río para mi muchos pez." Otra vez a proteger a sus jóvenes, todos los animales del bosque dijeron el oso para salir.

Pero los niños necesitan tener presente que aunque las reglas y las fronteras puedan parecer estar aburriendo, los padres han atravesado las mismas cosas cuando ellos eran jóvenes.
